Determining which wedding vendors to hire for your wedding can be incredibly overwhelming! That’s why we called in Stephanie ofEmbeau to shed light on which details to consider when looking around for the perfect wedding day hair + makeup artist(s):
While it’s tempting to dive in to the bottomless pit of social media and countless wedding vendor sites, it’s helpful to have some criteria to help you narrow your search. Consider + ask yourself these questions:
1) WHAT DO I want for MY wedding morning?
Picture your perfect wedding morning: You wake up, the sun is shining, you smile to yourself before you hop out of bed with excitement… Then what? YOU get to create everything about that day, right down to the way you get yourself ready. Do you picture yourself and your bridal party going to a salon together with Mimosas in matching coffee mugs and bridal party flip-flops? Or perhaps you go for a jog, shower, and have a team of beauty professionals come onsite to help you get ready in your pajamas? Some beauty professionals only work in the salon, and others work solely onsite. It’s important to determine what you want for your wedding morning before you go looking for the perfect fit!
Some other things to consider about your morning are: your timeframe for getting ready, and whether you’d like a team to help you get ready or something more intimate, like a person or two. Some bridal beauty vendors have large teams they hire out to conquer hairstyles for large wedding parties, and other vendors are a one-man/woman shop!
2) What type of business do I want to work with?
Be aware of whether you are hiring the business owner or their team. Ask questions, and if there’s a particular image you like on their web page (or their Forever Bride listing!), be sure to ask which artist performed the work so you are connected with the right person.
3) WHAT BEAUTY PRODUCTS DO I WANT TO USE?
Wedding day beauty is nothing without beauty products. Are you particular about the products you use? Do you have sensitive skin or are certain scents ‘too much’ for you? Communicate!! Tell your beauty professional(s) during your consultation what you like and what you don’t like, if they aren’t accommodating or flexible, move on. You will find someone who can meet your needs. It’s your day, and you should feel and look like yourself and be completely comfortable with all aspects of the experience.
4) Do I have a ‘wedding day look’ in mind?
Do you have a vision of who or what you’d like to look like for your wedding day? Be real and honest with your expectations. Do you actually want to look like Beyonce? YOU GO GIRL. Be up front about it, and look for a hair/make-up artist that will tell you what’s realistic when customizing that look for you. Use pictures to communicate likes and dislikes, and talk about past experiences to better discern what will and will not work for you.
Not everyone has a vision for their big day however, maybe you have NO IDEA what you want. That’s okay! Many brides don’t know what they like but know what they DON’T like… When you’re looking for some guidance on a hair and make-up look, it’s important to consult with someone who’s got plenty of experience- look for a well-seasoned professional who’s been in the business for at least 5 years. Perhaps the most honest tool you can use to help you make your choice is reviews!! Reviews are written by brides just like you, and they can be the best indicator of the type of service you can expect from a vendor. Is it important to you to have someone with a calm and peaceful presence on your wedding day? A review will shed light on that. Are you looking for someone that will do exactly as you tell them to? Or someone who will help customize a look just for you? Reviews will help you find that too!
When it comes down to it, the wedding vendor world can be overwhelming if you don’t have a focus. Spending some time figuring out exactly what you want (and don’t want) can be a huge time-saver in the long run because you’ll be able to narrow in on the right people much more quickly.
