A Modern Twist on Outdated Wedding Processional Music

Musical advice provided by our friends Bill and Todd at Abiding Harmony. Modernize your wedding processional with their expert advice!

Why have we not moved on from the traditional processional music like “Bridal Chorus” by Wagner and “Canon in D Major” by Pachelbel? It feels like every aspect of the “big day” changes every year”¦except the music. Every year there is a new trend with dresses and floral arrangements and “boho” and “vintage”. But one thing that has always stayed very neutral is the music.

“Bridal Chorus” was made famous at a wedding in 1858″¦.I think its rein on the wedding march is over!! Walk down the aisle to music that describes who you are as a couple and something that will accentuate all the emotions that you will most certainly be feeling.

I am going to be bias and start with the option of having someone write something original for you because I have seen firsthand the impact it can have. Think about it like this: There’s a person who asks you what kind of music you’ve imagined yourself walking down the aisle to. You give them an incredibly in depth description of what you’ve heard in your dreams”¦and then BOOM”¦.there it is! Any combination of instruments in any style. You want to hear beats like Calvin Harris and strings like Vivaldi”¦done. You want to hear acoustic guitars like Avett Bros. and piano like Chopin”¦done. The beauty is the fact that afterwards, no one else will ever be able to use that piece of music on their wedding day. It’s yours. Forever!

The other option is to sit with your spouse-to-be and choose songs you can both agree on and then either hire musicians to learn instrumental arrangements of those songs or just play them off a playlist. I am sure you could think of 3 songs right off the top of your head that would be so cool to walk down the aisle to. Like, “Holocene” by Bon Iver, “Ragged Wood” by Fleet Foxes, or “Love Souvenir” by Calvin Harris. As long as you’re not at a venue with music restrictions, there are no rules!!

Choose something that immediately makes you think of the person you’re about to spend the rest of your life with. In the end, this is your day to share with your family and closest friends. Give them a true taste of who YOU are and don’t feel like you have to choose the same music your mom or your sister chose”¦because you don’t!! It’s 2018″¦you can do what you want!!
