The Most Popular Bible Verses for Weddings & What They Mean

*Insert any wedding theme here* and you can incorporate any of these versus into your ceremony and reception. That’s right, whether you’re wedding theme is traditional, boho, French, black tie, etc. you can share your favorite Bible verse in your decor, in the invitations, read aloud during the ceremony, and more! Sharing what’s in your heart and mind for your marriage gives the wedding a truly intimate and more personal feel for your guests.

Let’s look at the most popular (for good reason!) Bible verses at weddings:

1_Corinthians_13.png

1. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails.

The Bible shares that love is more than a feeling. It is full of action. Having this piece of Scripture shared at your wedding serves as a type of vow to your partner.

Romans_12.png

2. Romans 12:10

Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

This verse will demonstrate your level of commitment and investment to your partner.

Ephesians_5.png

3. Ephesians 5:22-33

22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[a] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church”” 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”[b] 32 This is a profound mystery””but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

*WARNING* This verse often gets taken out of context. For more info, read all of Ephesians. But this is a very beautiful piece of Scripture that shares the duties of each partner and how they can be there for each other. It brings love and understanding into the relationship. It should not bring one partner above the other.

Ecclesiastes_4.png

4. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

9 Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:
10
If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
11
Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
12
Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

This poem shares the true partnership between two people – the fundamental basis of being there for someone in the highs and lows is demonstrated here and the strength that comes from inviting Christ into your relationship.

Genesis_2.png

5. Genesis 2:18-24

18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.
But for Adam[a] no suitable helper was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[b] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[c] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
23 The man said,
“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called “˜woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”
24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

*WARNING* This is another verse that is easily manipulated to give one partner more “power” than the other. I see this verse as God seeing a need and filling it in the best way possible. And that is what he has done in your life! Neither you nor your spouse can do everything alone, but together you are able to use your strengths to support the others weaknesses. Together, you can create a healthy dependency on one another.

Song_of_Songs_8.png

6. Song of Songs 8:6-7

6
Place me like a seal over your heart,
like a seal on your arm;
for love is as strong as death,
its jealousy[a] unyielding as the grave.
It burns like blazing fire,
like a mighty flame.[b]
7
Many waters cannot quench love;
rivers cannot sweep it away.
If one were to give
all the wealth of one’s house for love,
it[c] would be utterly scorned.

This Song here recognizes love as passion that immerses human beings as much as they embrace it. There is danger and risk here, but also overwhelming promise and gain.

Colossians_3.png

7. Colossians 3:14-17

14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

This verse is great for the couple that desires Christ to be at the center of their relationship. It is a reminder to them and their guests that the foundation of their relationship is the same for all of their relationships and what keeps the two of them so close is the love of Christ.

Ephesians_4.png

8. Ephesians 4:2-3

2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

Love this verse if you are like me, an action-oriented person. If you like to know what to do and how to do it, this is a great verse to remember at your wedding!

John_15.png

9. John 15:12

12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

Sweet and simple. Christ’s command for your marriage (and all relationships!).

1_Peter_4.png

10. 1 Peter 4:8

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

Again, sweet & simple. It’s romantic, practical, genuine, and easy to understand.

1_John_4.png

11. 1 John 4:16-19

16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.
God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 17 This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
19 We love because he first loved us.

Remember the first verse we shared, 1 Corinthians 13:4-8? In that verse we saw how love is an action word, not simply a feeling. This verse compliments that one by demonstrating love as a weapon against fear and a strong foundation from God that we can rely on.

Proverbs_31.png

12. Proverbs 31:10
A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.

This verse is great for the husband to use to compliment their wife! Husbands, after you share this verse, remember to follow up with, “and I have found her!” Or something cute and cheesy like that. *Cue the aww*

1_John_4-12.png

13. 1 John 4:12

No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

This verse verbalizes the power of what loving someone means. Not only for the person receiving the love, but also the one giving it!

Proverbs_3.png

14. Proverbs 3:3-4

3
Let love and faithfulness never leave you;
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4
Then you will win favor and a good name
in the sight of God and man.

Again, a verse to commemorate the foundation of your marriage: Love and Faithfulness.

Matthew_19.png

15. Matthew 19:4-6

4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator “˜made them male and female,'[a] 5 and said, “˜For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'[b]? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

The importance of unity within a marriage is demonstrated perfectly in this verse. Let nothing separate them and let them share in the intimacy of being one. *WARNING* Becoming one does not permit unhealthy boundaries or codependency. In order to keep that unity, it’s important to maintain independence in one’s own growth and experiencing of life.
