How long has the company been around? & what inspired you to start it?
JJ: Good & Twisted Yoga is 5 years old. I have had a passion for teaching people about how to move and use their bodies to find more comfort and ease (both physically and mentally) for as long as I can remember! I started teaching classes 20 years ago, and eventually while managing a busy corporate career (my major is in accounting; I am a CPA) for 15 years, I continued to teach yoga because I just couldn’t give it up no matter how busy I got! One day, it became clear to me that I had a different calling, and although I loved my job, I really felt that I could be doing something to help more people and feel a deeper satisfaction in my work…so I opened this yoga studio!
What are the advantages and benefits of yoga?
JJ: The benefits of yoga are far more reaching than just finding comfort in the physical body-this is just the tip of the iceberg! The real magic of yoga stems from its ancient wisdom (yoga writings can be traced back over 5,000 years) into the mind, and how we really do become our thoughts, so time for meditation and a deep connection to our true selves is very empowering and healing. So many people are searching for meaning, connection and purpose in their lives, and I have found that yoga and mindfulness holds the key.
Any advice to give those who want to start trying out yoga?
JJ: If you are new to yoga, look for a beginner class to start out so you can build your practice from the ground up (at G&TY, try Good & Flexible and Good & Balanced classes!), and don’t be intimidated or afraid to be a beginner…we all start somewhere!
Would you recommend it for soon-to-be brides?
JJ: Brides-to-be can greatly benefit from not only the physical strength that comes from practicing yoga, but also from the calmness and sense of serenity that the breathing and meditation practices provide. There is so much “busy-ness” leading up to the big day, and I would love to teach brides how to slow down and savor every minute of this most special journey.
How is yoga a good way for brides to get in shape and take time for themselves before their big day?
JJ: Yoga is an amazing opportunity to remind ourselves time and again that we need to be at the top of our own priority list instead of falling to the bottom every time a new “to-do” gets added to the list! When we neglect self-care, we fail to be the best we can be in this life, for ourselves, and for those we love. Couples would do well to practice together, and stay connected to what is truly important as they build a future together.
What should newcomers expect on their first day at Good & Twisted Yoga?
JJ: Expect to be warmly welcomed to our community with a tour of the studio, to take a yoga class that challenges your body and mind while respecting current limitations, and permission to honor yourself for all the energy you put into creating the life you choose!
What sets you apart from other yoga studios or gyms that offer yoga classes?
JJ: We work very hard to offer a variety of class formats that provide a balanced approach to strengthening the body & mind. Our community is extremely inviting and we strive to never have any student feel out of place or unsuccessful in their practice…yoga is for everyone.
What is your main goal as a yoga studio and yoga instructors?
JJ: To be inclusive, to give our students that little extra push of encouragement so there is always personal growth, and to teach compassion for ourselves and others.
What types of yoga do you have and do you offer anything other than yoga?
JJ: We offer heated and non-heated class options ranging from beginner to advanced levels of practice. We have a beautiful studio equipped with full locker rooms, free towel service and tea, as well as retail space with great yoga products and apparel! We also have a massage therapist on staff (appointments can be booked directly here).
Is this a popular activity for brides/bachelorette parties/bridal showers and is one able to schedule private events/reservations?
JJ: Yes, we host many private yoga classes for groups and would be happy to do so for a bachelorette/bridal shower party! Email jj@goodandtwistedyoga.com for more info.
