We all crave authenticity, right? I know that’s a really over used word in media right now, but it’s true! Through all the different social media channels and apps we have, we still miss out on that deeper connection. But who has the time (or the money let’s be honest) to grab coffee with everyone?! That is why we do these Forever Features!
We enjoyed sitting down with Ryan & Maddie Loch to hear their heart and mission behind their custom jewelry store,The Jeweler.
1. What is your mission?
Our mission is to give the customer the highest quality craftsmanship for the best price and best jewelry design experience, by allowing them to work one on one with myself (Ryan), the one who creates their piece from the from start to finish.
2. How long has your company been around?
I started The Jeweler two years ago, as my own private company. I have worked as a goldsmith for 12 years, prior to opening The Jeweler.
3. What are the company’s top three core values?
Integrity, Honesty, Adaptability
4. What can a bride expect when booking with you? (i.e what does the process look like?)
Each booking seems to go a little differently, since it is tailored to each couple’s requests. Typically, we will meet at my office and start with some inspiration photos or just a description from the couple. We then start exploring my online design program to build something to fit the exact size, style, color, and budget that is needed. After we find exactly what the couple is looking for, I start the process of growing a wax prototype. We then schedule another meeting for the couple to see the prototype before I cast it into gold. They are able to try this piece on and even set the stones onto it to get an extremely accurate idea of what the finished product will look like. After they approve the wax, I cast it into gold, set the stones, add any personal engraving, if desired, polish it all up, and its ready to be picked up and worn forever! The entire process takes approximately 2 weeks, from the first appointment to pick up.
5. Is there anything else you would like to add that sets you apart from other companies?
At most jewelry stores, you typically have two options- 1) to select something out of the showcase that is already made. or 2) make some edits to an existing piece while working with a salesperson, who will then interpret your desires to their in house goldsmith or send the project off to an out of state company. With The Jeweler, I do the entire project from start to finish, allowing much less room for miscommunication. This also keeps my costs down, making my products an average of 30-40% less than your average jewelry store.
6. From starting the business to where you are today, what have been some of the biggest challenges and how did the company overcome them?
Starting up is so hard. No one knows your name, no one thinks of you as an option because they have no idea that you exist! We needed to reach people, but being so small, I could not invest thousands of dollars into marketing. I have spent years learning the industry and seeing what works and what doesn’t. I couldn’t sit idly by, watching people get a second rate experience when I knew I could provide them with so much more! Slowly, clients came in and referred me like crazy! Everyone was so surprised at how much money they were saving with me without compromising on quality! They have so much fun designing their very own custom piece of jewelry, and they want to share that experience with their friends! Being good to people has helped me immensely.
7. What are some of your goals for 2018/2019?
In July 2018, I am opening my second location in Excelsior. In 2019, I’d love to grow to a another Minneapolis location.
8. Who is a role model or someone that inspires you?
I aspire to have a heart like Jesus and business ethic like Walt Disney
9. To what do you attribute your success? (i.e. hard work, luck, others, etc)
Dedication, passion, no sleep, prayer, wild imagination, a wife to tame that imagination, networking, and great mentors.
10. If you could give the world, your friends, or your clients, one piece of advice, what would it be?
Always get more than one opinion. Surround yourself with realistic positivity. Educate yourself in whatever you’re buying
11. What are you currently watching on Netflix?
The Office for the 800th time, but other favorites include Parks and Rec, New Girl, basically every Marvel movie, and White Collar, but I seem to have My Little Pony on most often for my associates
And behind every great guy is an even greater woman, am I right ladies?! Maddie and Ryan have been married for five years and she is the ultimate supporter and encourager.
